Coaching is “an ongoing intentional conversation
that empowers a person or group
to fully live out God’s calling.”

Coaching often addresses specific issues that are affecting a person’s life – work, family, marriage, social roles, church – and their sense of wanting to be more successful in that area. Coaching is very goal driven and focused on a person’s desire to move from one point to another, often in terms of performance. Coaching, therefore, is typically problem centered, although the approach to the problem being solved tends to focus more on present, rather than historical issues.
Coaching is supported by five (5) beliefs:
Coaching avoids diagnosing or offering advice as to how to solve problems; rather, it is a process of walking with a person, listening deeply to their verbal and non-verbal cues; asking questions to clarify the longings reflected through those cues, and witnessing or affirming the person solving their own problems. From a technique perspective, coaching uses questions, active listening, rephrasing, inviting deeper reflection, summarizing what is heard, encouraging the coachee to set realistic goals and celebrate success.
Coaching is supported by five (5) beliefs:
- people are responsible to figure out their own lives;
- more information is not the key to transformation, relationship and experience are;
- the coach’s role is to assist the coachee to know what they already know;
- the coachee is responsible for the stewardship of their own life; and
- change occurs most successfully with support and proper motivation. (Tony Stoltzfus)
