Supervision is a professional process supporting the ongoing growth and development of spiritual directors. Supervision offers those who work as spiritual directors a safe space in which to reflect on their practice and be accountable, with the goal of growing and being of greater service to their directees. Supervision is a best practice and ethical requirement for all Spiritual Directors to engage in.
"Supervision provides spiritual directors with the opportunity to look closely at the interactions they have had with directees. As they look at their own stance and responses to the individuals with whom they meet, the areas of giftedness and growth within their own lives becomes evident. Effective supervision both challenges and supports our lives and our ministry.”

Supervision is a form of accompaniment for Spiritual Directors who want to deepen and hone their skills as someone who accompanies others. Supervision provides spiritual directors with a safe and supportive environment for exploring their experiences with directees. The process aims to develop awareness of the self, of the needs of the directee and of the presence and action of the sacred in spiritual direction. Supervision may integrate education, support, exploration, and consultation, all with the goal of helping the supervisee to become a more skilled and grounded spiritual director.
In supervision, a spiritual director is invited to contemplatively reflect on both a specific spiritual direction session and one’s ongoing practice in service of being ever more faithful and present companions with the people one is invited to journey with. Skilled and compassionate supervision assists spiritual directors in deepening their self-awareness, cultivating greater interior freedom, and refining the unique gifts and capacities they bring to their ministry of spiritual companioning.
Supervision provides the director with:
The Supervision relationship offers an encouraging, freeing environment to uncover and go deeper into the Director's own interior process and identify issues that may be impeding their capacity to be present to others, such as the possibilities of transference and counter transference; code of ethics issues; boundaries and burden bearing.
And also, of course, to share the deep joys of your work.

WHAT DOES A SUPERVISION SESSION LOOK LIKE?
Based on a contemplative reflection form that you will fill out and submit prior to the supervision meeting, we will explore your experience as a director with your directee.
A typical session will begin with contemplation and prayer. Following that we will review a particular session that you have recently had that raised questions, concern, and/or a trigger for you.
Our time together will focus on inviting you to explore what is beneath the surface: to better understand yourself, to discover how best to accompany your directee, and to acknowledge how the Spirit has been and is present in the spiritual direction relationship.
The goal of supervision is to assist you to become more supportive and skilled in accompanying the seeker in a relationship with God.

What are the Benefits of meeting regularly with a supervisor?
"Much of a spiritual director’s ministry is spent in isolation – mostly with one directee at a time. We listen to the whispers of Spirit and draw on resources that support and nourish these seekers and, hopefully, ourselves. If we are fortunate, we, as directors, have access to continuing education opportunities and have a faith community that encourages contemplative and other soul-nurturing practices. And yet…
- Where do we find a safe space to share wonderings and insecurities?
- How do we grow in our practice without making sessions about outcomes and fixing (for self or the seeker)?
- What do we do if we are triggered or become aware of a dual relationship by a directee’s words or actions?
- Where do we take our struggles with “going too far” and “saying the wrong thing”?
